Sure, you can theoretically build UI for a DEX/lending protocol/smart account that shows a user their balance from storage (and enforcing light client proofs). There are many great examples like eternalsafe.eth by @devanoneth - but I want to see those tools be able to get to the next level of being actually useful. Because actual humans are confused by just seeing that they have 123.45 aUSDC on 0x0babe... and they will annoy the hell out of your support channels, so this just isn't actually viable. They need to see when and from where they have deposited and when and where they were withdrawing. That needs an indexer. Actual users (not BFFs - bots, friends and farmers) usually even demand more than that: price history, name registries, discovery of pools and opportunities - all of which need indexers
