Cassius Clay was one of the deadliest gunfighters in American history. Some say he killed more men in duels than any who came before or after him. He was also an abolitionist. He successfully fought off many assassination attempts due to his efforts to end slavery. He kept a cannon under his stairwell in case of attacks by pro-slavery mobs. In one famous speech, he took out a copy of his Bible and said: “For those who believe in the Laws of God, I make to you this argument against slavery.” Then he took out a copy of the Constitution, and said: “For those of you who believe in the Laws of man, I make to you this argument against slavery.” Then, he said, “For those of you who believe in neither, I present to you this argument against slavery.” And he unholstered his dueling pistols. A true American legend.
