Useless idiots. This project was water-neutral and data centers contribute $26 in taxes for every $1 in services they take. Kiss a $3.6 billion economic investment goodbye.

Holy shit! David beat Goliath? The people of Tucson banded together and killed an Amazon data center project poised to guzzle millions of gallons of water a day.
@rowanfornow The water line extension would serve south Tucson, replacing potable with reclaimed water in appropriate areas. Even if you completely ignore the 80-90% return rate, the total project would not exceed the equivalent water use of 4 golf courses. Pima has over 40 gold courses.
But why build it in a desert??? Well, you see, it was going to be 70% solar powered and there's a lot of solar energy in the desert. And energy is, by orders of magnitude, the more important question when it comes to data centers.
