Genius Makers by Cade Metz is a great read. Not only is it a good history of some key people who pushed neural nets/deep learning through AI winters, but because it was published in 2021, it's an amazing window into the world of AI as scaling is working but pre ChatGPT release.

One fun part was everyone knows about move 37. But I learned about move 78. Lee Sedol played a 1 in 10000 move that so unnerved AlphaGo it put it on tilt. After reading this passage I watched the documentary on AlphaGo, which is great, and shows DeepMind folks early on.
