I couldn't get ChatGPT to stop infiltrating every answer with the Knicks after I told it to remember that my son was a fan--and it has me thinking about not only the role of memory in AI but also the role of forgetting. Maybe the best AI memories won’t be flawless databases. Maybe they’ll be artful editors, skilled at remembering imperfectly. Knowing which signals are core, which are passing whims, and which should fade gently into the background.
