While we await the verdict in the Storm trial, its good to be reminded that shielded pools are just math, and not all that hard to understand.

So here's a thread with the basic intuition of how they work:

An L2 that changes from optimistic to ZK is like a guy that got lost on the high sea for 7 days tying a stone to his foot to end the misery faster.
A curse that Ethereum has run into is illusion that an L2 has to choose between 2 evils:
- wait 7 days for finalization (optimistic)
- pay a shitton of money (zk)
Ethereum has realized optimistic is a dead end (because no one wants to wait 7 days) so ZK must be the solution. VCs start parroting it and L2 teams have to comply with their absurd request.
But the sad truth is it's going to bring down these struggling prejects even faster.
Building a L2 on ZK today means millions USD of unnecessary cost on your chain per year. Millions that eat away years of runway.
Ethereum right now is a bet that zK will become 100-1000x more affordable.
Of course your chain could save yourself from all that misery TODAY by switching to Polkadot's parachain model, enjoy fast finality AND high economic security.
But what would your investors say if you made a sound economic choice? 🙃
