No one remembers what the first votary worshipped. Ten thousand keep the vigil anyway: masked, robed, bowed under heavy cloth, each devoted to something they cannot name. What they believe shows only in the mask they wear, what they carry and the one light they keep. Ten of them were never assembled from parts at all. Believe in what remains.
